Talisker Launches 'Wilder Seas' Limited Edition with First-Ever 100% Recycled Glass Bottle

Talisker x Parley: Wilder Seas Bottle Shot

The new release, a collaboration with Parley for the Oceans, will see £3 from every bottle made donated to help Parley protect the oceans

Talisker announces a new limited edition release, Talisker x Parley: Wilder Seas Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This is the first product collaboration by Talisker and partner in ocean conservation, Parley for the Oceans. Talisker is donating £3 from every bottle made (which totals more than half a million pounds) to Parley initiatives that support ocean protection and preservation.

Its packaging is the most innovative to date from Talisker, presented in the distillery’s first 100% recycled glass bottle made from biofuel and beautifully designed with a ceramic decoration to reduce labelling. Co-designed with Parley, the Wilder Seas bottle features topographic lines inspired by the undulating underwater landscape of Skye's coastline. The decoration creates a texture reminiscent of waves crashing on the coast, and of the foliage of sea forests themselves.

This is the first time Talisker will release a carton-free whisky with a 100% recycled paper neck tag rather than being boxed. Research shows Talisker has reduced its glass bottle emissions for this product by 82% and its total packaging carbon emissions by 77% through these initiatives. By significantly reducing carbon emissions, Talisker Whisky is helping protect ocean health. Rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are driving up water temperatures and ocean acidification, both of which are detrimental to marine ecosystems.

This Talisker Wilder Seas Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the first ever release from the distillery finished in French Oak XO cognac casks, resulting in a rich and complex whisky, with waves of smoke and spice that roll into sea salt. The smooth notes of plum and stewed raisins capture the formidable, deep blue force of our sea with newfound depth and rich fruitiness. Acclaimed whisky writer Charles Maclean described it as: “A rich, complex and tightly integrated aroma and a taste which is pure Talisker, with added dried fruitiness”.

Talisker and Parley's long-term partnership continues to support the protection and preservation of ocean ecosystems around the world. Native to the Isle of Skye, Talisker’s home, sea forests are prime underwater habitats which cover 25% of the world's coastline and play a critical role in planetary health, but are vanishing four times faster than rainforests. The new Talisker x Parley: Wilder Seas Single Malt Scotch Whisky will raise funds to help support vital projects to protect and preserve three of these sea forests located off the coasts of Scotland, South Africa and Chile.

Cyril Gutsch, Founder & CEO, Parley said, “Sea forests are as crucial to planetary health as any terrestrial ecosystem, yet their disappearance has largely gone unnoticed. Like forgotten guardians of the sea, sky and land, towering kelps beneath the surface harbor vast marine biodiversity, purify surrounding waters, regulate pH, sequester carbon, release oxygen, protect coastlines from storms and erosion and buffer us all from the worst impacts of climate change. Together with Talisker, we’re bridging design, eco-innovation and conservation in a tribute that honors the beauty and fragility of these magical forests and supports the work towards their protection."

SCOTLAND

Talisker and Parley are supporting groundbreaking scientific research in the remote Orkney Islands in Scotland by partners Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Heriot-Watt University and Blue Marine Foundation that demonstrates the vital role of sea forests in preventing climate change. The findings will help better understand where the carbon sequestered by these kelp forests goes and prove their contribution to the biodiversity of local marine ecosystems.

SOUTH AFRICA

Talisker and Parley are supporting the protection of the Great African Sea Forest, home to thousands of species, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. South Africa has 150 marine ecosystems that support more than 13,000 marine species, across stunning underwater sea forests.

CHILE

The rich kelp forest ecosystems in Chile serve as nesting sites for endangered birds and safe havens for endangered species of whales and dolphins. Parley, with the help of Talisker, are collaborating with local organisation Fundación Rompientes, to keep the oceans wild so that future generations can continue to enjoy them.

Talisker x Parley: Wilder Seas Single Malt Scotch Whisky is available to purchase globally from selected retailers and Malts.com at an RRSP of £75 per 70cl bottle, in the UK (inclusive of duties and taxes)

Tasting Notes:

● Appearance: A glorious, shining deep amber with reddish lights. The rich colour of rosewood or a freshly opened horse chestnut.

● Nose: Mild and dry in feel, yet rich overall. Tight-packed top notes of fruit and malt suggest malt bread with sultanas, dates and dried figs. Beneath them, a light mineral hint of chalk leads into rousing maritime notes of brine, salt crystals and ship’s rails in a high sea, all on a lightly fruity, winey base, with a hint of pipe tobacco. Adding a little water brings up a smoky note.

● Body: Medium to full.

● Palate: The creamy-smooth mouthfeel introduces a big taste that starts richly sweet then quickly becomes salty, smoky and fruity, with lush, sweet hints of sultana and fig mid-palate wrapped in rising peppery spice and smokiness. Rich and intense at natural strength, it becomes slightly sweeter, fruitier (suggesting ripe figs again) and spicier if water is added.

● Finish: Long, warming and lightly drying, with a familiar late peppery catch and a most appealing smoky-fruity aftertaste.
